Diabetics And Oligofructose

Oligofructose is used in several countries as a replacement of sugar or fat. Such use of oligofructose helps in reducing the overall calories of the food where it is used as a replacement of sugar. Oligofructose is used in food products like ice cream, confectionaries, backed items, and various dairy products to reduce the overall calorie count.

Oligofructose is characterized with less calorie value compared to conventional carbohydrates because of (21) bonds connecting the fructose molecules. Several studies have proved that such bonds turn them nondigestible by the enzymes present in the human intestine. Therefore, oligofructose remains unchanged while passing through the mouth, stomach, as well as intestine. These studies signify that major amount of ingested oligofructose reach the colon where the fermentation of the substance takes place and colonic microflora takes the lead part in the fermentation of oligofructose in the colon.

Oligofructose permits you to have sweet foodstuffs and drinks without the negative effect of developing high blood sugar. Insulin response remains normal with the consumption of foods associated with oligofructose. Some studies claim that oligofructose may lead to improved control of insulin and blood sugar, thus improving the metabolic factor which extends significant help in weight and diabetes management.

Due to the non-digestible character of oligofructose it is considered as suitable for the patients suffering from diabetics. Scientists have not found any influence of oligofructose on the serum glucose and no stimulation on insulin secretion or no alteration of glucagons secretion.

Oligofructose is considered as a subgroup of insulin but with smaller chain fructose polymers. Phyto-Glyco Nutrient oligofructose is derived from chicory by means of hot water. The pure oligofructose is, to some extent, sweet and has no aftertaste. It has the sweetness profile like sucrose. It offers you the healthy fiber in the form of a sweetener. As oligofructose remains unchanged in upper intestinal tract, the only method it is able to enhance caloric intake is through the process of fermentation in the colon. This pathway has much less ability compared to the pathway of carbohydrates which get absorbed in small intestine and metabolized in liver. As a matter of fact oligofructose is characterized with 1.5 kcal/g caloric value.

The carbohydrates and sugar are absorbed in the form of monosaccharide or single sugar unit in our small intestine. Most of the ingested oligofructose cross the small intestine unchanged like other dietary fibers. This is the key reason that oligofructose does not increase the level of insulin in our blood and thereby it is preferably suitable for the people suffering from diabetics.

Oligofructose is rich in fiber and shows noteworthy dietary fiber actions. Using oligofructose in diet will lead to a more balanced and healthier diet. It can be consumed by mixing with fruit juice or can be added to coffee or tea as a replacement of sugar. You can make your cereal sweet by using oligofructose or can add it to your desert or lemon drink.
